Travel Advent Calendar 2016: Part 2

Back again for the second installment of my 2016 Advent Calendar round-up. Just to re-cap, I’ve gathered together a selection of my favourite travel pics and stories from the past few years and have been posting them daily in honour of the Festive Season – and for your viewing pleasure, of course. Catch-up with part one here , parts 3 and 4 to follow…

Day 7

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The old-school shopping trip

Day 8

Catedral Metripolitano de São Sebastião, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The almost-religious design experience

Day 9

Trinidad, Cuba

Home-Sweet-Home Away from Home

Sometimes a place feels just like home. After the manic energy of Havana (where my nights were spent drifting from club to club with the crew from my salsa class, fuelled by Havana Anejo, stepping all over the toes of any guy brave – or stupid – enough to to ask me to dance), I escaped to Trinidad for a little r & r. My casa was gorgeous. It had that rustic-shabby-chic-Etsty vibe and the owner, Dani, sat me down with a coffee and her life story about 30 seconds after I'd dropped my bag. It was like being with family (the ones you actually like and get on with…). And she made a killer breakfast: jam made with mangoes from the tree in the yard, fresh baked cinnamon rolls and strong black coffee, just the way I like it. Honey, I'm home. #traveladventcalendar #adventcalendar #cuba #trinidadcuba #travelinspiration #travelgoals #breakfastofchampions #hostalalameda

Day 10

Koh Phangan, Thailand

The post-Full Moon Party Recovery

Can't believe it's taken me 10 days to drop my first sunset… After the party? The recovery. A Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan makes a lot of travel bucket lists. It's epic, noisy, insane, a violation of several health and safety codes (probably) and very, very messy. It's an experience, let's put it that way (I ended the evening taking someone to the medical centre in an ambulance…but that's a story for another day). The best bit? The day after. Sleeping 'til late back at our apartments, posh dinner at the hotel next door then chilling on the beach with new friends, watching the sun set as we waded far out into a sea that never seemed to pass our knees. Random, but awesome. #TravelAdventCalendar #adventcalendar #kohphangan #kophangan #thailand #fullmoonparty #haadrin #aftertheshowitstheafterparty #sunset #travelbucketlist #travelgoals #travelinspiration

Day 11

Oahu, Hawaii

Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

This picture is full of regret. Yes really. It totally p***es me off. Not the image – how could it? – just the memory of how I missed out on an amazing experience because I. AM. SO. VAIN. A spectacular beach in a dreamscape setting populated by SO MANY giant turtles. They were on the sand, in the sea… "Here, grab my snorkel, get out there, it's amazing!" Said my friend. "It's ok. I'll just watch". Truth was, we had dinner that night and I didn't want to have to spend ages back at the hotel dealing with my hair. MY BLOODY HAIR. What an idiot. Still had an amazing afternoon and I'm lucky to have had the opportunity to even sit on a beach that beautiful. Lesson learned, though… #traveladventcalendar #adventcalendar #hawaii #oahu #heavenisaplaceonearth #travelinspiration #travelgoals #travelbucketlist #doh

Day 12

Wat Phou, Champasak, Laos

The Early Bird…

Not a sunset, but a sunrise for day 12. Had to be out of bed and in a tuk-tuk by 4am to catch this view over the Wat Phou ruins in South Eastern Laos. Who knew I could get up that early? (I was obviously a little bleary-eyed. Let's not talk about the spot on the lens…). An advantage of being there at the literal crack of dawn? No crowds. There was about six people there in total, and I was with 2 of them. Maybe that's just an advantage being in Laos. I bet if I ever make it to Angkor Wat, it'll be rammed 24/7. I'll take the peace where I can get it. #traveladventcalendar #adventcalendar #laos #champasak #watphou #unescoworldheritagesite #sunrise #breakadawn #temples #ruins #travelbucketlist #travelgoals #travelinspiration
